Rationale:
The Cengage/National Geographic 7th grade U.S. History textbook and digital resources, U.S. History American Stories: Beginnings to 1877, is a text aligned to the national and state Social Studies standards. It is a highly engaging textbook in which each of 23 7th grade U.S. History teachers may pilot the texts in classrooms and the digital resources, positively impacting all of their students. The supplemental materials include the digital text, available on all devices, and teacher and student resources and activities. Piloting the textbooks and resources in the classrooms across the district will allow us to thoroughly examine materials to determine if the instructionally meet the needs of the curriculum, state and local assessments, and content area. A large proportion of the district's social studies textbooks are outdated and damaged. This pilot provides our students and teachers with new resources to engage learners. The pilot texts and digital resources are available in English and Spanish. A careful vetting of instructional materials is good practice prior to making recommendations for purchase. The textbook has been reviewed by the Director of Social Studies, the Director of Library Services, the Director of ELA, and several social studies teacher leaders across the district. |
Funding:
This is a free pilot program. The district is not financially liable for any lost or damaged texts. The teachers will receive class supplies of the text as well as digital access for each of their students. |
